Phil Brenner’s Information and Policies

Welcome to music lessons. It is my goal as a teacher to help the student make steady progress and instill good practice and playing habits. Additionally, I will teach reading of music and rhythms. I also believe it is important for the student to have fun and learn an appreciation of the diligence involved in being a musician.

What you will need

  1. The student’s instrument should be in good repair. This is very important because a malfunctioning instrument will seriously hinder the student’s progress.
  2. The student will need to bring all the books being studied to each lesson
  3. Clarinet, saxophone and oboe players need to have a couple of good reeds.
  4. For practice at home, the student will need a music stand [the folding kind
will work just fine.] A metronome and tuner are very helpful as the student progresses.

Lessons end on the half-hour and hour so please be on time. Be sure to knock on the door at your lesson time so that I’ll know that you have arrived.

Practice is the only way to ensure that the student makes consistent improvement. I would suggest that the student set aside the same time each day for practice. Also, it is important to have a quiet place that is free from distraction. [No phones.] I recommend that beginners practice 15 to 20 minutes 5 times a week. More advanced students practice 30 to 45 minutes 5 times a week. You can’t practice too much.

The charge for lessons is:
o $100 per month for a half hour lesson
o $150 per month for a 45-minute lesson
o $200 per month for a one-hour lesson

Payment is due the last lesson of each month for the upcoming month. Your payment reserves your lesson times; therefore, full payment is required regardless of attendance! No exceptions. This charge remains the same whether you receive 3, 4, or 5 lessons in a month. In the months with 5 weeks, the 5th lesson will be used as either: 1.) A make-up lesson for one that I have missed or 2.) I will take a week off in that month. This way the charge stays the same each month and it will average out to 4 a month. If you feel you’re owed a lesson contact me and we’ll work it out.
The rate for individual lessons is $28 per half-hour. Please note: Paying the individual rate does NOT reserve your lesson time.
There is a $5 late fee for payments made after the 10th of the month. If your account becomes more than 30 days late, you will forfeit your lesson time.

Make-up lessons
The first thing to remember is that I have only a very limited number of make- up lessons available at any given time. Make-ups are possible but, not guaranteed. I offer make-ups in an effort to be fair. If you miss multiple lessons in a month, chances are good you won’t get to make up all of them. The only way to ensure that you receive all the lessons in a month is to attend at your scheduled time. Here are some guidelines governing make-up lessons.

  •  It is the student’s/parent’s responsibility to make arrangements with me.
  •  You must call/text me with advance notice that you will not attend your
scheduled lesson in order to receive a make-up. Those who give more
than 24 hours’ notice will be given priority.
  •  Make-up lessons will be taught only if your lesson payments are current.
I will take off Labor Day, Memorial Day, July 4th, Wed and Thu of Thanksgiving, Dec 23-26, Dec 31st and Jan 1st. In case of inclement weather, you will receive a personal phone call/text from me, so please make sure that I have current daytime contact information for you. You can always call/text if you have any questions about whether lessons will be taught.

Referral Credits
If you refer a student who pays for the first month’s lessons, you will receive credit for 2 lessons. If you have any questions about music lesson matters, please feel free to call/text me at 913-706-3122, or send me an email.
